As the study comes to a close, it is important that members of the group build on the foundations that have been laid. It is appropriate for each member to describe the overall experience of the study and identify the most significant learnings. Evaluating the study, the contribution of members and leader(s), and the goals expressed early on is a task that should not be overlooked. The crucial aspect now is declaring where you will go from here, and how you will go about it.

Writing Assignment #1:

Develop a personal "Strategic Action Plan" in which you outline the next steps for your continuing education (i.e., what you need to learn) and action (what you need to do) in working against racism and toward reconciliation. This plan might include a bibliography of materials to read, resources you want to explore, practices you want to implement at home, work, school, etc., relationships you want to develop, experiences you want to have, conversations you want to start, places you want to visit, other groups you want to connect with. Be specific in describing your steps in education and action, and be sure to indicate your time frame for achieving this plan. Be realistic—this plan is only a start!

Conclude your plan with a very specific statement about how you will make yourself accountable for this plan, including the names of persons to whom you will report your progress, persons who will hold you accountable.

Suggestions for Group Discussion
  1. Discuss the personal (and group) goals that were identified at the beginning of the study, and whether they were accomplished. If they weren't, or if some were and others were not, talk about why. What could have been done differently, or what should have been done instead?
  2. Identify the most significant learnings in the study, especially those that were not necessarily anticipated. If the study has made a difference in you, express this and describe where this difference may take you.
  3. Share and discuss your Strategic Action Plans. Probe for the reasons behind the particular steps identified as members share their plans. Talk about whether the steps are realistic and likely to accomplish the intended goal.
  4. Evaluate the contributions made by the members and leader(s) of the group. How did each member and the leader(s) contribute to the experience of the study? What do you take with you from your encounter with each of the participants?
Focused Question for Group Discussion

What do you want to communicate to the author of the book and the study guide, and who will take responsibility communicating it?
