The Gallup Organization
Gallup's
web site contains releases
of current and previous Gallup Polls results, including poll trends, special
reports, social audits, and social/economic indicators. There are also interpretations of
poll results on social issues and policy, including summary of 1997
Black/White Relations in the U.S.
General Social Survey
This is
the
principle site for accessing social science data on all matters of social
issues and policies. Getting around this site takes some time to learn, and
users will be best helped if there is some familiarity with the way the GSS
data is organized. First-time users should spend some time browsing the site,
especially the "mnemonic" and "questionnaires" sections. There is also a
search engine that makes it possible to peruse GSS-related reports.
Louis Harris and
Associates
The HarrisInteractive web site provides access to The Harris Poll library
containing polls and results over the last four years. A search engine for
this library can produce some interesting results.
National Opinion Research
Center
This site
is more limited than the GSS in its accessible resources because the social
science research conducted by NORC is more limited in its focus. There is
important information found here, including some additional information about
the GSS (NORC is the principle agency in conducting the GSS).
New York Times Race Poll
The New York Times has occasionally conducted polls on race relations in the
U.S., most recently in July, 2000. The results of that poll are available
online. Some of the results are compared to earlier poll results, as far back
as 1990. Along with the poll, there is a New York Times
article summarizing and interpreting the poll results.
Roper Center for Public
Opinion Research
This is
another social survey site with information and publications on several issues
related to race and racism. The center collects studies in public opinion
research, including the race relations report,
An American Dilemma, Part II (in .pdf format). You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader
to read this report. There are current and archived copies of their major
publication, Public Perspective, available on the site.
United States
Census Bureau: Current Population Survey (CPS)
There is a wealth of information on demographics in the U.S. available at this
site, as well as a comprehensive listing of all the publications available
through the census bureau in .pdf format. Also, data can be obtained on a state,
county and/or city basis. Results of the 2000 census can be accessed from the
homepage of the U.S. Census
Bureau.
